SUMMER

Summer in the Pitztal

Straight from our door you can set off on a mountain hike, a trail run or an easy walk down the valley. The trails around us lead to mountain huts, lakes and high passes with views of three-thousand-metre peaks.

Just 1.5 km of easy walking brings you to Mandarfen, where the cable car climbs to the mountain lake Rifflsee, and the base station for the Pitztal glacier is only a little further on.

The river Pitze runs through the valley, where Martin has a secret cold-water bathing spot he will gladly show you.

Five places worth visiting

Rifflsee

The highest mountain lake in Austria. From Mandarfen the cable car takes you above 2,200 metres, where you can walk an easy loop around the lake or set off on longer mountain hikes. You can also climb up on foot straight from our guesthouse.

Taschachhaus

A beautiful full-day trip up the Taschachtal valley to a high-alpine hut at 2,434 metres. Along the way you pass through classic Alpine scenery with views of the surrounding glaciers and three-thousand-metre peaks.

The Pitztal glacier and Café 3440

The cable car takes you up to 3,440 metres for a remarkable panorama of the Ötztal Alps. Café 3440 is the highest café in Austria, and the trip is worth it even without a demanding hike.

Braunschweiger Hütte

One of the most striking high-mountain destinations in the Pitztal. The climb to the hut at 2,759 metres rewards more experienced hikers with magnificent views over the glacial landscape.

Kaunergrathütte

One of the finest mountain trips starts right at the guesthouse. The path climbs past Plangerossalm to the traditional high-alpine hut Kaunergrathütte at 2,817 metres. The tougher ascent is rewarded with views of the surrounding three-thousanders and a genuine high-mountain atmosphere.

A Tyrolean cow resting on a mountain pasture in the Pitztal

The Pitztal offers far more than mountain hiking in summer. You can explore the valley by mountain bike, try sport climbing or bouldering, and see these mountains from a different perspective.

Mountain biking

The Pitztal has around 95 km of MTB routes at various difficulty levels, from easy rides down the valley to more demanding mountain routes in Alpine terrain.

Climbing and bouldering

The valley has a number of outdoor climbing areas suitable for experienced climbers, beginners and families alike. The popular Mandlers Boden has around 180 bouldering problems, while Gletscherstube in nearby Mittelberg also works well for family climbing.

ZIMA

Zima v Pitztalu

The Pitztal glacier (Pitztaler Gletscher) is the highest ski area in Austria. At altitudes of up to 3,440 metres it offers excellent snow conditions and one of the longest ski seasons in the Alps.

Together with the neighbouring Rifflsee area it offers around 68 kilometres of pistes at various difficulty levels. Rifflsee, with its gentler and more open runs, is popular with families, while the glacier suits sportier skiers, freeriders and anyone simply looking for perfect snow.

Both areas are covered by a single ski pass, so you can choose each day according to the weather, the snow or your mood.

The cable cars are 1.5 to 2 km from our guesthouse and are easy to reach by bus or car.

Why ski in the Pitztal

Skiing at up to 3,440 m

Ride the Wildspitzbahn cable car up to the foot of Tyrol’s highest mountain and enjoy high-alpine skiing with a panorama of the surrounding three-thousanders.

A long season and reliable snow

Thanks to the glacier and the high altitude, the Pitztal is among the most snow-sure places in Austria. The season starts as early as autumn and runs into spring.

68 km of pistes on a single ski pass

Pitztaler Gletscher and Rifflsee together offer runs for beginners, families and experienced skiers, with no need to choose between two separate areas.

Freeride and off-piste

The high-alpine terrain of the Pitztal also offers plenty of options for experienced freeriders and skiers who want to explore the mountains away from groomed runs.

Ice climbing

Frozen waterfalls make the Pitztal a sought-after spot for ice climbing. The valley has 45 marked areas at various difficulty levels, from places suited to a first attempt to demanding ice walls for experienced climbers.

More than downhill skiing

Cross-country trails and winter walking routes run through the valley, and you can head out on snowshoes or ski tours. Martin is a keen ski mountaineer himself, so he will gladly recommend places and routes to try.
